A Time for Understanding & Tolerance

The startling event of the past week have left many Pakistanis wondering as to the future of our country and how to percieve this latest happening.

I have been reading the comments posted by our readers and they highlight the sharp contrast that exists in our society today.

Whereas some suggest that the best solution is to slaughter all the maulvis (a rather irrational one in my opinion), others feel that this is just another in a series of Government propoganda, and those are just a few.

I do not think that blindly storming the mosque is a very good idea as it is a known fact that many innocent students are being held in there against their will.

Furthermore, slaughtering the maulvis will not help us achieve much. In the end we are Muslims, and this is supposed to be an Islamic state-thus we should abide by Islamic law. Adopting such a policy will only result in another Turkey as this was the same mistake Mustafa Kemal made. They might have acquired a more favourable position in the global economy, but it has come at the cost of their religious values.

I feel that the views expressed by a religious scholar Mohammad Naqvi sum up the problem and the situation quite aptly.

“In the past six months, the authorities at Lal Masjid tried their best to enforce a Taliban-style Shariah in Pakistan. But Maulana Abdul Aziz’z burqa-clad escape has proved that these people claim to be Jihaadis but when the time comes, they cannot live upto the challenge. The ulema should establish a way of dealing with such phonies, a large number of whom are present today.

We should understand that it was the spirit of sacrifice and brotherhood and not force which led to the spread of Islam.

At the same time, the Government should consider that this country was made in the name of Islam and should follow the rules set out by the Quran and Sunnah.”

Whether this is Government propoganda or an unstaged issue, the fact is that it has defamed Islam. The authorities at Lal Masjid used the wrong methods to try and enforce what they thought was right. There is no doubht that the establishments of a number of alcohol shops and brothels in not only Islamabad but in all the major cities is a serious social evil. But it is the job of the Government to shut down these institutions and not the responsibility of self-proclaimed saviours.

However, I do hope that this occurrence will open the eyes of the Government to the severely un-Islamic acts which need to be stopped and are currently ignored. If the Government was more efficient in establishing an Islamic society, such religious extremism would be easier to curb and avoid.

First of all, those who think that this is all a govt. drama are not very few. they are in substantial number.

the person totally responsible for defaming islam in this case is musharraf and he should be slaughtered.

Who is this religious scholar? I have never heard of him.

Busharaf is sole beneficiary of this incident. How it can be possible that our Army’s governemnt anna Pak army it self is unable to overtake one mosque especially when they have solved many major problems like Bugti, Sheikh Mujeeb, CJ(initially) successfully in the past. And our army only army in the world who done it many times)who can conquer a country in few hours is unable to solve it.

Kuch to hai jiski parda dari hai.

Yes, Musharraf could have borught these perpetrators down in a matter of a few hours. But i think you should hand it to him for handling the sitaution in a tactful manner. Would the 1600 have left the mosque unhurt if he besieged the mosuqe? I think not. The bloodshed would have been imminent and the wrath of the maulvis following the incident obvious. This article in dawn really surprised me. It said that there was no backlash in karachi following the lal masjid incident (http://dawn.com/2007/07/06/local1.htm). Now you all know that the very first after affects of any situation developing in Pakistan are first felt in Karachi. Yet, this time it was different. There were no stirkes, no wheel jams and most of all no loss of life. Surprising isnt it that the maulvis themselves didnt raise a voice againsnt Lal masjid? I beleive thye felt that the act was against the values and teachings of islam. And that it is. Tolerance is one of the major fundamentals of islams and by occupying the mosque thorugh brute force our so called called maulvis violated this very principle. I beleive that religion is between man and his god. Imposing your views on others is not only unethical but goes agianst the very pillars and foundations that our sacred religion is based on. Our problem lies in judging the others. We somehow happen to be so satisfied with our own miserbale lives that we have the time to actually comment on what the other person should be doing. Focus on yourself, mend your own ways and fill your own voids before reconstructing the lives of those you havent even heard of before.
What bothers me most however, is that a great leader has to stoop down to our level of thinking to prove his point for the better good of the country. Change is the beginning of a revolution, but it requires time and patience and us not backstabbing our own people.

If Busharaf wanted this task to be done without voilence, an ASI of Punjab Police would have been sufficient. Our beloved army should be only used to conquer PAKISTAN. What a waste of resource

    @ Haris

You seem to be quite adamant that the only solution to all of our problems is to be rid of Musharraf…

I am rather curious as to the replacement you have in mind….I am sure that along with me, alll of the readers would be interested in knowing who you feel would be able to do a better job as the head of the country….
