Attached below is an email from Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy. He tells the story of how a female teacher at Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) was assaulted a couple of days ago. Too many things have been pointing in the same direction recently. First you had the murder of Zil-e-Huma Usman, then the Jamia Hafsa episode (which hasn’t really ended), to the Lal Masjid fatwa against Tourism Minister Nilofer Bakhtiar which eventually led to her resignation as PML(Q) Women Wing’s President, and finally the government accepting all Lal Masjid demands (including enforcing Sharia in the country).
I’m not certain what ‘enforcing Sharia in the country’ means as it is quite vague. Chaudhry Shujaat’s response upong being questioned about it was: “No Muslim rejects the enforcement of the Islamic system in the country.”
Either way, things are looking bleak and it seems as if a group of people are trying to hold a nation to ransom. Let’s not forget the suicide threat issued by the Lal Masjid adminstration. To me it seems like an open threat against the people of our country and could easily be classified as an act of treason.

Subject: woman teacher assaulted at QAU
Upon hearing that the incident had happened, I went to the history department and met with Dr. Razia Sultana, associate professor. She is one of the few women teachers left at QAU without a hijab. She told me the following:
At about 10:00am RS was in her office working on her computer when she was suddenly hit from behind upon her head by a heavy hand. The man would have hit her again, but RS’s student was present and caught hold of the assailant. He was turned over to the chowkidars. He said that he had been instructed by God and would not allow bay-purdah women in the university.
He is not a university student. Apparently he had been stalking her since early morning. Although discouraged by the QAU authorities from doing so, RS has filed an FIR.
I saw the assailant. Very calm. He looks like a typical Talib.
Lal Masjid’s threats are for real.

Wre the hell is the authourities are????? why dont they do something to protect everyone from typical talibans???? Mulana of Jamia Hafsa also announce by the illegal FM channel (running by their madarsa) that he would encourage ppl to throw TAEZAAB on the face of the female teacher of Quaid-e-Azam Uni.
All this drama has been staged and under protection of the deobandi school of thought - the JUI-F group. They have shifted most of their endangered Madrassas from NWFP into this place in Islamabad.
The opposition didn’t expect the Government to take this matter so coolly and with tolerance.
The Opposition expected the Government to over react and use force. The result of which would have been few female students dead and few injured.
That would have given the Opposition another issue to Politicize against govt.
